Specimen Accessioner

The Specimen Accessioner works closely with Applied DNA Clinical Labs personnel to catalog patient specimens, such as: swab, transport media, body fluids (blood, urine, etc.) or tissue samples, for review. Those samples are processed and examined by laboratory professionals, doctors, and nurses for diagnosis and treatment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Verifies all specimens that come in are labeled appropriately and that they match the labels on the requisition to ensure that there are no issues with patient identity and reporting.
  • Performs all paperwork, technical and non-technical procedures required to process and submit specimens.
  • Assigns specific computer-generated identification numbers, checks for accuracy and records all items processed.
  • Operates data entry terminals and automated data systems. Follows standard sequences/coding when entering data and corrects, edits, and/or verifies data entered into automated systems.
  • Prepares specimens received for testing in reference laboratory.
  • Enters patient demographics into the LIS.
  • Reviews and accessions specimens and testing orders for laboratory analysis.
  • Perform routine laboratory assistant duties according to standard operating procedure (SOP).
  • Performs proper storage and discard of specimens after testing, according to SOP. Cleans work area, and surrounding laboratory before and after completion of workday.
  • Reviews requisition and sample acceptability. Tracks internal and external errors and reports deficiencies per protocols.
  • Checks and maintains inventory for the accessioning bench. Notifies and submits purchase order requests as needed or notifies supervisor.
  • Adhere to company values, safety and compliance policies and procedures.

Qualifications and Skills

  • High School Diploma.
  • Associates Degree or higher (Preferred).
  • 1-year experience working in a similar role.
  • Must have basic computer skills and knowledge. Experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, and Google Drive (Preferred).
  • Must be reliable and exhibit excellent data entry skills.
  • Must be extremely detail-oriented with strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of general laboratory safety issues and universal precautions.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance (Preferred).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be flexible and willing to work Saturdays and/or Sundays as needed.
