Proprietary SigNature® T Technology Authenticates Pima Cotton Quality Throughout U.S. and Global Supply Chain

STONY BROOK, NY. May 1, 2017 Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. (“Applied DNA or the Company,” NASDAQ: APDN), a provider of DNA-based supply chain, anti-counterfeiting and anti-theft technology, product genotyping and product authentication solutions, announced the debut of its textile molecular tag technology, SigNature® T, in Bed Bath & Beyond®1’s Wamsutta®2 line, featuring PimaCott®3,  is now available at locations nationwide and online. SigNature T verifies that the Wamsutta home fashions products sold to consumers are pure Pima cotton, grown in the San Joaquin Valley, California. Products include comforters, pillow cases and shams. Additional information on Wamsutta PimaCott – including the molecular traceability aspects of the Wamsutta PimaCott line – can be found at Explore Wamsutta PimaCott.

The introduction of the Wamsutta line featuring PimaCott at Bed Bath & Beyond today follows Applied DNA’s announcement in December 2016 that, through one of its partners, the Company would provide its SigNature T products and services platform to empower textile supply chain security for one of the largest US-based retailers over an extended multi-year period with established revenue thresholds.SigNature T is a botanical-based molecular tag that attaches tenaciously to the cotton fiber, ensuring reliable, secure traceability throughout the entire manufacturing process in the U.S. and abroad. Cotton is indelibly tagged with SigNature T at the gin in the U.S. The tagged cotton is then verified throughout the supply chain. Points of verification include:

  • Before leaving the U.S. once it has been baled and assigned a unique bale ID.
  • After the raw cotton has been spun into yarn, and at various points after the yarn has been woven to be cut and sewn into home textile products.
  • Before being shipped back to the U.S.

“We can now preserve the integrity of premium U.S. cotton throughout the supply chain, promoting its traceability to farms which grow and produce responsibly and its purity without the blending of inferior cottons,” said Dr. James Hayward, CEO of Applied DNA Sciences. “Today, consumers care deeply about where their products originate. With our technology, retailers and brands can be confident that the products on their shelves are true to the label.”

Consumers recently voiced their concerns over product transparency through a survey conducted in December 2016 by Harris Poll, on behalf of Applied DNA. The poll surveyed more than 2,000 U.S. adults over the age of 18, finding that thirty percent of Americans said they would completely stop purchasing a brand if the brand made a false product claim about a bedding/clothing product being 100 percent organic, 100 percent Pima cotton, or other claim of this type. Additionally, roughly three in five Americans (61 percent) said if they found a brand made their bedding/clothing products from raw cotton that was picked by child/forced laborers, they would no longer purchase the brand.

“We are pleased to help bring the new standard in Pima cotton purity to the marketplace, with a technology that guarantees product authenticity,” said MeiLin Wan, Vice President for Textiles at Applied DNA. “SigNature T is the solution that provides certainty not only for consumers, but also for retailers. In addition, U.S. farmers that grow cotton now have the knowledge that their cotton is protected throughout the supply chain.”

5-Year Supply Agreement for Bulk DNA Manufacturing

Agreement Highlights Growth Opportunity for Company’s Proprietary DNA Production Technology

STONY BROOK, NY. April 20, 2017 Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. (“Applied DNA or the Company,” NASDAQ: APDN), a provider of DNA-based supply chain, anti-counterfeiting and anti-theft technology, product genotyping and product authentication solutions, announced that it has entered into an agreement to supply bulk DNA for a leading chemicals company serving the in vitro diagnostics market. The agreement is for five years with quarterly shipments and includes optional three-year renewals thereafter. The Company expects the agreement to generate annual revenues of approximately $500,000 beginning in FY 2018 with a pro-rated amount expected in FQ4:17.

Applied DNA’s manufacturing technology enables very-large-scale production of bulk DNA using proprietary polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods. The technology, acquired with the company’s purchase of the assets of Vandalia Research Inc., in 2015, enables custom DNA sequences to be produced in large scale, quicker and cleaner when compared to culture methods of production. Applications for DNA manufactured using Applied DNA’s methods include vaccines, diagnostics, reagents, bio-agriculture, and gene therapies for existing and emerging markets.

“The ability to offer PCR-based DNA production that is more efficient and cost-effective is unique and a significant competitive advantage in the marketplace relative to other bulk DNA production methods,” said Dr. James A. Hayward, president and CEO of Applied DNA. “This long-term supply agreement reflects efforts being made to cross-sell our cutting-edge capabilities to both existing and prospective pharmaceutical and diagnostics customers, opportunities that we believe hold the potential to yield similar, long-term, recurring order-flow. Together with an increasing number of in-bound inquiries from prospective customers that recognize the benefits of PCR-produced DNA in their product, we believe this business should see growth going forward.”

Applied DNA Sciences, Loftex to Debut “Innovate with CertainT”

Posted on

First Towels with Verified Recycled Components at New York Home Fashions Market: Industry-changing technology enables recycled PETs to be tracked and traced throughout supply chain, ensuring truth in labeling

24 March, 2017 – Applied DNA Sciences today announced its partnership with Loftex Home, the manufacturer of high-quality towels and home textiles, to introduce “Innovate with CertainT”, the first fully source-verified, recycled components in towels. Loftex will use CertainT™, an integrated supply chain platform verifying authenticity from source to retail. With this platform, Loftex assures towels containing recycled plastic water bottles (PET) are, in fact, recycled. Applied DNA will add Loftex as a CertainT licensee. Loftex towels using CertainT are scheduled to start manufacturing the third quarter of 2017 and will be introduced at New York Home Fashions Market, March 27 – 30 at the Loftex Home Showroom, 50 W. 48th St., New York.

“As we became aware of the global authenticity issue and the increasing consumer demand to know where their products come from, we searched for a solution that would address this need quickly,” said Charles Gaenslen, CEO of Loftex Home. “Applied DNA’s CertainT exceeded our expectations. We adopted the CertainT platform not only because it aligned with our commitment to innovation and our product-development stream, but also, it provided the opportunity to bring consumers sustainable products that are authentic and traceable to origin. We are planning to expand our use of recycled PET in Loftex products, and will continue to work with Applied DNA on these projects and at no additional cost to the consumer.”

“Innovate with CertainT”
The first Loftex product as part of the “Innovate with CertainT”  line will be a terry bath towel with molecular-tagged, recycled PET and cotton. The benefits of a blended cotton recycled PET towel are not only to be more sustainable, but also, to create a towel with superior absorbency and “quick dry” characteristics at no additional cost.

“Loftex is one of our first customers to adopt the CertainT platform,” said Dr. James Hayward, president and CEO of Applied DNA. “Use of our CertainT logo signifies a product’s compliance with the company’s supply chain platform. This platform enables licensees to differentiate their brands based on authenticity. Platforms like CertainT will help companies like Loftex produce innovative products utilizing an efficient and trusted traceability system with a fair return.”

Specifically, Loftex will use Applied DNA’s SigNature® T molecular tags, and when combined with CertainT, will provide a single platform to tag, test, track and trace products throughout a certified supply chain. The molecular tag is extruded into recycled components that create recycled PET fiber, with no impact to performance or quality of the fiber or filament yarns. Any piece of the towel can be forensically authenticated by detecting the molecular tag, ensuring its authenticity and origin.

The shift towards a circular economy requires innovative business models and entrepreneurial partners. Platforms like CertainT will help companies, such as Loftex, continue to produce innovative products utilizing an efficient and trusted traceability system with a fair return. Traceability and transparency, combined with trust in supply chains builds consumer confidence.

Launch of CertainT™ Supply Chain Platform

CertainT™ integrates molecular tagging, testing, tracking and reporting to elevate supply chain traceability, transparency and trust

22 March, 2017 – Applied DNA Sciences has introduced a service platform known as CertainT™. The multi-service platform provides integrated, streamlined access to Applied DNA’s end-to-end products and services for confirming a product’s authenticity and origin with Trust, Transparency and Traceability.  Specifically, the CertainT platform includes: SigNature “molecular certificate” tagging, forensic testing, quality assurance services, and traceability reporting as products are processed from raw fibers or materials to finished goods.

The CertainT Supply Chain Platform consolidates proven individual elements of Applied DNA’s portfolio with a business-specific lens. The CertainT Platform will be first incorporated into customer products in textile, apparel, footwear, pharmaceuticals, personal care and agricultural-related products. The CertainT emblem will appear in marketing materials and product labeling.

“CertainT licensed partners will benefit by using the platform to create new and innovative products with visible identification to its customers. CertainT licensees will benefit from Applied DNA’s ecosystem of extensive expert knowledge of incorporating molecular tags into or onto a wide range of natural and synthetic materials, and with forensic testing and quality assurance practices within a dedicated supply chain,” said Dr. James Hayward, CEO of Applied DNA Sciences.

“Brands, e-tailers and manufacturers that adopt CertainT, can now provide customers with products they trust with confidence,” continued Dr. Hayward. “In today’s uncertain times, consumers are demanding more of their purchases. There is a keen sensitivity to how products are manufactured and how original fibers or raw materials are handled – especially as it relates to in-home use.  The openness and transparency in the way products are made enable consumers to feel good about what they are buying. They are looking for the ultimate trust factor.”

Traceability with trust is how Applied DNA’s technologies are transforming the way businesses connect with consumers. The power of molecular certificates, the core of the CertainT platform, are proven by:

  • More than 100 convictions by law enforcement and security agencies in the U.K..
  • More than 150 million pounds of cotton has been tagged. with over $1 million of adulterated fabric interdicted in the supply chain.
  • Over 750,000 microcircuits have been tagged for the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency.
  • More than 25,000 high-end, German-made cars have been marked with successful identification of stolen parts.

Survey of over 2,000 Americans Reveals Majority of Customers Want to Buy Verified Aloe

Applied DNA Sciences released results from a recently commissioned survey of over 2,000 Americans regarding their attitudes toward misleadingly-labeled Aloe vera products and the importance of products with forensically verified ingredients.

Key Findings include:

The survey was conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of Applied DNA Sciences in response to recent revelations that many consumer products claiming to contain Aloe vera do not, in reality, contain measurable amounts of this ingredient (Bloomberg Aloe vera Article).

verified aloe 86% of americans polled

Said they would be more likely to buy an Aloe vera product that has ingredients that have been forensically verified over a product that did not.

verified aloe 76% of americans polled

Said they would not be likely to buy an Aloe vera product they were planning to buy if they heard or read that it did not, in reality, contain any Aloe vera.

verified aloe 68% of americans polled

Would be willing to pay more for an Aloe vera product made with forensically verified ingredients versus one that is not.

verified aloe 65% of americans polled

Indicated willingness to pay more for an Aloe vera product that is ethically sourced versus one that is not.

Dr. James Hayward, President and CEO of Applied DNA, said, “No consumer wants to be cheated. With independent laboratory studies revealing scant evidence of Aloe vera within a range of consumer products prominently featuring this ingredient on their labels, there is clearly a need for better verification techniques. Our verification methods in Aloe or food supplements are a natural extension of our work in cotton, and offer an ideal way to help manufacturers protect their brands and supply chain while benefitting consumers and retailers alike.”

Scientists can identify ingredients — including Aloe vera — using unique gene sequences known as the “bar code of life” (BCOL), but these sequences are subject to degradation during harsh processing and can be easily lost or damaged when a product is manufactured.

In comparison, Applied DNA Sciences’ SigNature® molecular tagging is much more stable. The tags are combined with the Aloe vera during the manufacturing process. The tags meet the FDA guidance for Physical Chemical Identifiers that can be added to foods or drugs and can be ingested by consumers. Preliminary studies conducted by the company suggest that, in contrast to BCOL sequences, SigNature molecular tags survive in finished goods and can be detected even after dilution from their original concentration by one million-fold, proof that Aloe vera is contained in the product. Quality control laboratories can now use the SigNature platform to prove the presence of key ingredients such as Aloe vera. Unlike the BCOL, SigNature molecular tags are not restricted to biological materials and can also be used to tag non-biological materials. By using SigNature tags and forensic knowledge, brands and retailers can protect their reputations and attract the high percentage of consumers indicated by the survey results who value and would be prepared to pay more for products with forensically-verified ingredients.

Applied DNA’s solutions have helped consumer product companies, textile manufacturers as well as military and government agencies to authenticate products and protect their brands.
