(“Applied DNA” or the “Company”), provides an update today on its accomplishments toward commercial-scale production to support global material traceability for companies declaring sustainability goals to be achieved by 2020. High on the consumer watchlist is the plastics recycling issue. Applied DNA’s CertainT® platform provides the evidence that recycled product is used. CertainT-verifiable products are now available through supply chain partners and brands, including Amazon and other e-commerce and retail stores, with outlook for growth as product flows to store shelves.
The CertainT platform and forensic services were conceived to empower companies with the most advanced commercially-scalable and affordable technologies to help prove their compliance with stated sustainability goals.
The CertainT “Tag-Test-Track platform enables companies and their supply chains to designate a unique molecular identity tag that has meaning specific to the tagged material: for example, geographic facility location, brand, product line or even date of manufacture. This tag can be applied on or in a variety of recycled materials that includes a wide range of polymers such as PET (polyethylene terephthalate), polypropylene, polyethylene, acrylics, and many more. The tags are then tested either in the field or in the lab, depending on material type and customer requirements. Portable DNA testing devices for tagged pellets are deployed for textiles made of recycled PET and viscose. The tracking of tagged items and their test reports can be accessed by customers from the cloud-based CertainT Textile Portal.

What's New in Cannabis
June was a busy month for cannabis. Applied DNA’s partner TheraCann International secured an agreement with South Africa’s House of Hemp (HoH). This agreement includes implementing TheraCann’s ETCH biotrace™ platform which utilizes technology from Applied DNA. TheraCann was selected by HoH to be their technical expert and project management team to achieve medical GMP standard for international cannabis export and to provide the necessary technologies to track every gram, every penny, and to ensure crop quality and reliability.
In addition, TheraCann also announced its intention to list on the TSX-V via a merger with a listed company.
Cannabis represents a substantial addressable market for both TheraCann and Applied DNA going forward and our two companies are working closely together to build a robust pipeline of sales opportunities that will generate purchase orders to Applied DNA. Applied DNA also looks forward to the receipt of a final $4.0 million from TheraCann under the licensing agreement by August 15, 2019.

The CertainT physical molecular taggant, backed up by Applied DNA’s in-field and laboratory authentication products and services, can provide unique traceability information for the product itself not available elsewhere. The collaboration includes connecting TruTrace’s StrainSecure™ system and blockchain with TheraCann’s non-appendable Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) blockchain to provide forensic levels of traceability of cannabis and cannabis derivatives at any point in the supply chain to guarantee product quality.

Applied DNA Closes the Loop on Traceability for Egyptian Pima with Genotyping Assays for Cotton Authentication
STONY BROOK, N.Y., May 30, 2019. Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. (“Applied DNA,” “the Company,” NASDAQ: APDN), today announced that it has closed the loop on traceability for Egyptian Pima using DNA-based genotyping assays for cotton authentication. These assays have been used to verify fiber and will be extended to yarn, fabric and finished goods in an ongoing validation program. The Egyptian Pima developments join and expand a series of US Pima cotton assays performed within Applied DNA testing services and are based on work conducted over the past 3 years related to the validation of a known library of cotton cultivar standards.
“This solution closes the loop for the cotton industry that has been under a cloud of controversy surrounding evidence of cotton products labeled as Egyptian cotton versus those which are actually grown in Egypt. There is no substitute for DNA analysis when it comes to cotton traceability and transparency because of its ability to do what other technologies cannot do, which is to forensically authenticate the fiber through to yarn and finished goods,” stated Dr. Michael Hogan, vice president, Life Sciences, Applied DNA. Ink advancements aid in product integrity
“Quality inks deliver excellent printer and code performance,” says Sherry Washburn, business unit manager for supplies at Wood Dale, Ill.-based Videojet. “Inks formulated for coding and marking allow beverage manufacturers to identify dates, lot and batch numbers, and other manufacturing information directly on bottles, cans, pouches, boxes, cases and pallets. Unique codes fight product diversion to unauthorized channels and counterfeiting. Clean, clearly printed information like ‘best-by’ dates can enhance a consumer’s perception of the brand.”
Videojet’s Washburn further expands on the ways that inks can help protect product integrity. “To stay a step ahead of counterfeiters, beverage manufacturers have become savvier,” she says. “They’re moving beyond invisible fluorescing inks as counterfeiters have become more skilled at evading and duplicating them. The beverage industry is looking for more advanced solutions, like SigNature molecular inks, to help them protect their brands. Unique to each manufacturer, these inks are created with the addition of a unique and secure molecular tag to facilitate the traceability of products and packaging.”
