Did you know that molecular tags are now used on U.S. Organic Cotton?
Woolam Gin is proud to sell pure, Texas-grown organic cotton. This desire for purity and traceability led Woolam to adopt Applied DNA's SigNature® T molecular tagging and testing platform. Once tagged, cotton products can be traced from farm to finished product, with forensic proof that their cotton has not been blended with non-organic fibers, or those grown outside of the US.
Woolam Gin completed their Global Organic Textile Standard ( GOTS v 5.0) audit in July of 2017 and was granted certification in August 2017 as the first US gin to achieve GOTS v 5.0 Certification. This Certification includes Applied DNA’s SigNature T molecular tag and platform within its scope.
Applied DNA’s SigNature T molecular tagging and testing platform for Organic Cotton was installed at Woolam Gin in O’Donnell Texas beginning with the 2016 organic crop. Products containing the tagged cotton will be sold under the OrganiCott® brand, and will be available at retail in 2018.
The Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative monitors the Organic Cotton that is grown and transported to Woolam Gin. The cotton arrives certified by USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) via the Texas Department of Agriculture, as meeting all requirements for organic farming of cotton. Woolam was the first Texas gin to process organic cotton in 1991 and is now the first gin to become GOTS v5 certified.
GOTS is a voluntary stringent global standard for the post harvesting processing (including ginning. spinning, knitting, weaving, dyeing, manufacturing and finishing) of apparel and home textiles made with organic cotton. The Certification along each node of the chain of custody allows the final product to be labeled with the GOTS logo, providing consumer confidence that the Cotton that was so carefully grown to US USDA organic standards, was also processed to highest environmental and societal standards.
“We are committed to a ginning process that authenticates our Texas organic cotton at its source,” said Kendall Harris, manager of Woolam Gin. “We take this commitment seriously and work hard to ensure that our organic cotton meets the highest standard to date. Woolam Gin is pleased to partner with Applied DNA and Control Union to complete our GOTS certification. This was a huge step and it is an honor to become the first GOTS v5.0 certified gin in the United States.”
The Cotton Gin is the first processing step for cotton, where the seeds and the leaves are removed from the harvested cotton. The clean cotton, called cotton lint, is tagged by Applied DNA with a unique molecular tag prior to being baled and transported to a warehouse. The bales are then shipped to a GOTS certified spinner, as the next stage in the process.
Consistent with GOTS review standards, Applied DNA’s molecular tag was analyzed and was deemed to fall well within the GOTS processing requirements as an inert substance, having no negative residual effect on the organic cotton or the environment.
